Brief introduction of Xishuangbanna

Jinghong is capital of the Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. It also was called the City of Daybreak. It was said that the founder of Buddahism, Sakyamuni come to Jinghong to spread scripture of Buddahism.when he arrived just daybreak and saw the city of Jinghong, so he called Jinghong as the City of Daybreak.If you come to here, you will suprised to it's so quite. It is really a slow life style and nice place to relax yureself.

Xishuangbanna, located at the extreme southern tip of Yunnan Province with Burma and Laos to the south, is 730 kilometers from Kunming. It occupies an area of some 20,000 square kilometers. There are more than ten ethnic minorities :Dai, Hani, Bulang, Jinuo, etc, with a total population of 796,000. Among them, the Dai Nationality takes up one third in number. Xishuangbanna lies just below the Tropic of Cancer and the land is hilly with some mountains and deep valleys. Lancang River and its tributaries flow through the area. Indian Ocean monsoons bring in humid air and it is often windless.The climate is ideal for plants and animals.One quarter of China's faunal species and one sixth of its plant species are living and growing on this marvelously rich and fertile area.

In Xishuangbanna, there are approximately 100,000 hectares of virgin forest with over 5,000 species of woody and herbaceous plants, ranging from huge arbors to primitive ferns. Rare and precious animals and birds thrive in the relative safety of the dense tropical jungles.

Since there are only two seasons here, hot and dry, and hot and humid, people for generations have never seen snow. When cold winter comes, most of the places in China are the world of ice and snow. But here, it is green and luxuriant with flowers everywhere, and without feeling of cold.
In Dai language, Xishuang means twelve; Banna means a thousand pieces of land. Xishuangbanna is twelve thousand pieces of land, which simply denotes twelve administrative units.

For centuries, Xishuangbanna had been a hidden land and it was almost inaccessible. In the mid-19th century, it took a month and a half on foot from Kunming to Jinghong. Now it takes us only 12 hours by bus or an hour by plane. Xishuangbanna is not only renowned as a huge natural zoo, but has earned the name "the Pearl on the Crown of the Kingdom of Plants".

There are many scenic spots here. Chunhuan(Manting) Park, Nationality Park, the Tropical Crops Research Institute, Peacock Lake, Mange Buddhist Temple, Mandou Folk Custom Village, White Elephant Lake, Manluandian Folk Custom Travelling Village, Manjinglan Dai Village, Olive Plain, Wild Elephant Valley(Nature Reserv),Mengyang Elephant-Like Tree, King of Tea Tree, Manfeilong Bamboo Shoots Pagoda and Mandian Waterfall are in Jinghong. Octagon Temple in Jingzhen, One-Tree Forest and the landscape of Daluo River are in Monghai. Monglun Tropical Botanic Garden, Looking-up-into-the-Sky Tree, Corridor in the Sky and Big Root are in Mongla.
